Course Reserves

Course Reserves are course-related materials that instructors make available for their entire class to access. Course reserve items are borrowed for one hour, three hours, one day, three day, or seven days, depending on the instructor. Reserve items cannot be renewed, but can be checked out multiple times throughout the semester.

Information for Students

How can I find a course reserve for my class?

  • Physical reserve items-- books, DVDs, etc.-- are kept at the Information and Research Desk on the first floor.
  • Reserve lists can be accessed in the library catalog by title, author, course ID (e.g. HIST3050), or instructor's name. Reserve lists include both physical and electronic materials.

Things to know:

  • Bring your 49er ID to check out a course reserve item.
  • Course reserves are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Materials cannot be renewed but can be checked out multiple times through the semester.
  • Hourly course reserve items must be used in the library and returned to the Information and Research Desk, not placed in a return drop box.
  • All reserve items accrue a $1 per hour late fine if they are returned late.

Information for Faculty

Faculty can place on reserve either physical items that they or the library owns. If the library does not own an item, you can request that we purchase it to go on reserve for your course. We do not purchase assigned textbooks or use Interlibrary Loan to obtain reserve materials. We do purchase supplementary materials for your courses.

For physical items:

  • Choose a loan period for the items going on reserve (one hour, three hours, one day, three days, seven days).
  • If you own the items, drop them off at the Information and Research Desk as early as possible before the start of the semester to avoid any processing delays, and complete a course reserves form at the desk to attach to your reserve items.
  • If the library owns the items, submit the course reserves form online, and we will retrieve the items to place them on reserve. Alternatively, please feel free to locate the items in the library yourself and bring them to the desk to place on reserve.
  • Typically we can place on reserve any title and format that is available for check-out. If the item is checked out, we will rush recall it.

For electronic course reserves:

  • After a request for electronic reserves is received, library staff will determine if your request falls within copyright guidelines. Once the material is scanned, staff will upload the pdf files into the instructor's Canvas files.
  • In order to have course reserves assist you in the scanning and placing of files into your Canvas classrooms, instructors will need to assign a co-designer role to the library reserve staff.
  • To place a request for electronic reserves, please email reserves@uncc.edu

Copyright Concerns

We are happy to assist you in determining the Educational Fair Use status of items submitted for electronic reserves. Be sure to include a copy of the original copyright statement for all copyrighted items. We will get back to you if there are any copyright issues that have to be addressed.
